Have you ever noticed how certain foods such as pizza, burgers, cookies, and alcohol, often lead to poor food choices and binging? What if you took a moment to THINK before taking that first bite of pizza?
That very first bite can lead to a downward spiral of poor food choices, canceling out all the hard work you put in at the gym this week. Do you eat clean all week but binge on processed foods all weekend?
” I mean, why spend all week eating clean, killing your workouts, and then blow it all on the weekend?”
Let’s put it all into perspective. That donut you are craving will be scarfed down in less than a minute. What are the consequences of that choice? Did you have goals to lose 1 or 2 lbs this week? Is that donut getting you closer to your goals? Think about how empowered you will feel if you stop and think about that choice, and choose the yogurt over the donut.
Once you begin to consider how you are going to feel after a binge, versus making a healthier food choice, you create a stimulus for change. If you simply learn to increase your awareness about the consequences of the donut, you are on your way to changing bad habits and ultimately attaining your goals.
HOW DO YOU INCREASE AWARENESS?
- Keep the trigger foods out of your house-“One of my trigger foods is peanut butter. I seriously have an addiction to peanut butter.I crave it all day from the very first bite of my morning toast. If you have similar feelings about a particular food, trust me, it’s a trigger food! ” Clean out your refrigerator and pantry; if those foods aren’t there, you are less likely to eat them.
- Associate the consequence with the action – Develop new habits that associate the consequences of your food choices. This requires learning to pause before making your food choices. Everyone has cravings. But what if you substitute a healthier option for that donut or pizza? How about making your own mini pizza on an english muffin? Simply top it with pizza sauce, add your own toppings, and pop it in the oven. And you can have approximately three of the muffins in place of just one slice of pizza.
Once you begin to choose the yogurt over the donut, you begin to empower yourself. This gives you the power to change unhealthy habits and create positive lifestyle changes. It’s all about making the right choices on a consistent basis, resulting in improved health and a better quality of life!
